Agenda:

  • Check Guardians capacity to take on animal wellness supports - vet
  • Make a poster for Fall cleanup, launch during open house

  • Wildlife Camera setup under EMP – find wildlife corridors 

    -use PC501? (put an extra camera on Island Rail) 

    -Connect with Jack Fisher? Start on funding (Linus & Kate) 

Notes:

  • Melissa presentation about animal control vs. wildlife protection
    • Animal Control:
      • regulated by the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act --> BC SPCA
      • Animal control is enforced through city/municipal animal by-laws
      • NOTE: case law on the general application of provincial law on federal lands
    • Wildlife Protection:
  • Look into best practice for domestic animal disposal on MOTI managed roads
  • decolonize the language ("law" "enforcement")?? How can we educate the community to better understand the human-animal relationship
  • ****Pet education in general is in area that needs to be addressed
  • Reach out to CVRD to update MSA to make sure they don't forget about Malahat --> Shannon

Action Items:

  • SR to generate the poster for community re: fall clean up
  • LS to talk to Alyssa re: Wildlife Camera setup under EMP – find wildlife corridors 
  • MT to start research and compile data around the decolonizing process for how to best assist the community in understanding of domestic animals - SECOND HALF OF JANUARY TO START
  • LS to reach out to conservation officer to request data for wild animal sighting, also RAPP line
