I'm Ashutosh Sharma, and I'm honored to join the Malahat Nation administration as your new Economic Development Coordinator. Originally from India, I've made beautiful British Columbia my home, settling in Victoria with my family. My journey in education, culminating in a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, has taught me the value of continuous learning and adaptability.
As I step into this role, I'm eager to learn from the wealth of knowledge within the Malahat community. I'll be working closely with the Economic Development team, focusing on projects like the Malahat Business Park, Malahat Fuels, and renewable energy ventures. My goal is to listen, understand, and integrate Malahat values into the Nation’s economic initiatives, ensuring they align with community values and priorities.
I'm here to learn about Malahat’s vision for sustainable development and to explore how we can promote the Nation’s economic development. I'm excited about the opportunity to grow alongside the community, applying my background in engineering and sustainable development to help advance the Nation’s goals.
Thank you for welcoming me to the Malahat administration.
I look forward to working together to build a prosperous future that reflects the unique strengths and aspirations of the Malahat community.

Hello Malahat Nation, I’m Christian Tapnio, and it’s an honor to be part of this incredible organization.
My family and I moved to Ontario, Canada in 2010 from Abu Dhabi, a journey that has been both exhilarating and transformative. I pursued my passion for technology at Sheridan College in Ontario, where I graduated from a Software Engineering program.

The Malahat Podcast
A recent addition, the Malahat Podcast stands as an auditory compliment to the newsletter. The podcast is released every two months, on alternating months to the newsletter. This way the community is receiving updates every single month. Please bear with us as we work out a plan for organizing episodes, until we have something more concrete, please reach out directly to George or Jessica Harry to discuss your ideas!
Facebook Group
facebook.com/groups/malahatcommunity
The Malahat Nation Community Facebook group is an established platform for sharing quick updates to the community, event posters, and linking to various pages on the Malahat Nation website. It is also a great platform for community to ask questions directly, and leave their comments on the various posts. It should be kept in mind that the Facebook is only available to those who have a Facebook account, so this platform is naturally limited in reach.
Facebook post requests can be made to the #facebook channel in the Malahat Nation Slack.
Open Houses
https://malahatnation.com/news/community-update-meetings
We’re excited to announce some changes to our Community Update Meetings (Open Houses) for the new year! Previously held on the first Wednesday of each month, these gatherings will now be scheduled quarterly in the evenings to allow more opportunities for all interested community members to attend.
Chief & Council Meetings
These events are held at the Kwunew Kwasun Centre and are open to all community to join in person. We've historically made these events available over Zoom, however have been experiencing little to no engagement. We will be exploring alternative ways to digitize these meetings and make them more accessible to members.
- Strategic Plan & Budget Approval - Early Spring
- Annual Report & Financial Statement Approval - Early Fall
Event Calendar
A digital version of the Malahat Nation event calendar is in the works by the Malahat IT Department. Updates to follow.
